NotesIn 1905, James Bale, 8, arrived at Quebec, Canada, in a group of 75 children from the Bristol Emigration Society, accompanied by Mrs. Forster and en route to Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada.

On October 26, 1917, at Sussex, New Brunswick, Canada, James Auther Bale, 21, enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces. He declared that he resided at Kars, Kings, New Brunswick, Canada; that he was born in London, England; that his next of kin was his brother, William Bale, whose address was not known; that his date of birth was May 31, 1896; that he was a laborer, and that he was not married. He was described as 5 foot 4-1/2 inches in height; fair complexion; hazel eyes; brown hair. He was a member of the Church of England.

While advancing on the Canal-du-Nord during Military Operations at Cambrai on September 27, 1918, Private James Arthur Bale was instantly killed by shrapnel from an enemy shell.

He is buried at Quarry Wood Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France. Grave Reference: I. B. 21.
